LTO 9 is a further step in the evolution of linear tape technologies, bringing many benefits as noted by the [LTO Ultrium Consortium] among these benefits are the increased capacity and transfer speeds leading to reduced carbon emissions as less tape stock is required for storing the same amount of data. LTO is considerably cheaper than public cloud solutions and more resilient than HDD-based storage technologies.

These massive benefits inevitably mean that there needed to be a compromise, and this has come in the form of a narrower environmental recommended and allowable operating conditions.

Key to ensuring a good consistent experience with LTO 9 is controlling the operating environment of your LTO 9 drive, keeping it within the LTO Ultrium consortiums thresholds for both temperature and humidity. Temperatures beyond the thresholds can lead to drive errors and humidity problems especially can create unwanted amounts of static to build up as the tape is spooled back-and-forth over the drive heads which can lead to the tape sticking to the heads and causing errors in operation.

To avoid these errors that will lead to slower drive performance and poor tape filling with capacity wastage, Symply strongly recommend adhering to the "Recommend" values for LTO-9 in the table below.

Not adhering to the recommended operating conditions can mean lengthy troubleshooting as we work with you to understand the operating conditions of your LTO 9 drive.

SymplyPRO and Data Cartridge Acclimatization Time:

Acclimatization time is required if the temperature of the SymplyPRO drive when opened is different from the temperature of the environment it will be operated in. The recommended initial acclimation time is four hours after the drive has been unpacked. Symply recommends for LTO-9 that the SymplyPRO product and LTO data cartridges are stored together for 24hrs before use in the environment that they will be used in. This will ensure the correct acclimatization.
