Note: SymplyATOM installs the latest 6Gb and 12Gb ATTO SAS drivers, along with latest LTFS drivers.  If you are using an ATTO SAS HBA you can ship steps 3 and 4 and proceed to step 5.

1 - Confirm you have everything

  • SymplyPRO SAS Models:
    • SymplyPRO SAS
    • SymplyPRO SAS XTH
    • SymplyPRO SAS XFH
    • SymplyPRO SAS 1U Rackmount
    • SymplyPRO SAS 2U Rackmount
  • An Apple computer with spare PCIe slot installed with a SAS HBA which is compatible with the version of macOS installed.
  • Or an Apple computer with a SAS HBA installed in a Thunderbolt expansion system, the SAS HBA needs to be compatible with the version of macOS installed. 
  • A SAS cable to connect from the SymplyPRO SAS to the SAS HBA.
    • Symply supply a 2m premium SAS cable with each SymplyPRO SAS product, depending on the model purchased it will either be 
      • SFF-8644 -to- SFF-8088
      • SFF-8644 -to- SFF-8644
  • Power Cord.

2 - Prepare your Mac for installation

Macs equipped with either a T2 Security Chip or are Apple Silicon based Macs ship by default with a Security Policy that blocks Third Party Kernel Extensions. Follow the [instructions in this article] to modify the Security Policy in Recovery Mode using the Startup Security Utility to enable your Mac to communicate with your Symply products.


3 - Install Your SAS Driver

Install the SAS driver for your chosen SAS HBA.

4 - Install LTFS Drivers.

If you wish to use LTFS, then you need to download and install [IBM LTFS Software] Single Drive Edition (SDE),


Most backup and archive applications that utilize LTFS for writing to LTO tape will install an LTFS driver as part of their own installation process, for example if you are using Archiware P5, Hedge Canister or Yoyotta, there is no need to install this LTFS driver separately.



5 - Install SymplyATOM

We've created a combined installer for our support and maintenance utility - SymplyATOM - the combined installer will install all the necessary software and device drivers to support all of our SymplyLTO products. The installer also sets the preferences for SymplyATOM, there should be no need to modify SymplyATOM's preferences after running this installer.
