TABLE OF CONTENTS

What is SymplyATOM2?

SymplyATOM2 is a cross-platform LTO tape drive diagnostic and management utility designed to give both casual and expert-level users access to essential tape operations, diagnostics, firmware management, and LTFS tools - without requiring command-line knowledge or third-party utilities.

It replaces the original SymplyATOM with a modern, purpose-built application that resolves all known stability limitations of the previous version while introducing substantial new capabilities.

Who is this for?SymplyATOM2 is included free with all Symply LTO tape products. If you currently use SymplyATOM, SymplyATOM2 is its direct replacement and we recommend upgrading.

What’s New

Cross-Platform Support

SymplyATOM2 is available on both macOS and Windows - bringing the full suite of Symply LTO management tools to Windows users for the first time. Each version is built natively for its platform.

Faster, Smarter Diagnostics

Diagnostic tests in SymplyATOM2 use a new native SCSI diagnostic engine that communicates directly with your LTO drive hardware, providing faster results and detailed per-step reporting. Each test step reports individually - so when a problem is found, you and Symply Support can pinpoint exactly where it occurred.

Integrated Support Workflow NEW

Previously, troubleshooting required you to manually save diagnostic logs, locate them on disk, and email them to Symply Support. SymplyATOM2 has a built-in Submit to Support function that packages your diagnostic results and uploads them directly to Symply’s support infrastructure - linked to your existing support ticket. This removes the manual steps and gets your issue to the right engineer faster.

LTFS Check & Repair NEW

SymplyATOM2 introduces a complete tape health and recovery toolset with no equivalent in the original SymplyATOM. When a tape is detected, SymplyATOM2 automatically reads its LTFS index and presents volume information and generation history. From there, four operations are available:

OperationSafetyDescription
VerifyNon-destructiveChecks tape consistency without modifying any data
RollbackDestructiveRolls back to a previous generation of the tape index
Deep RecoveryDestructiveAttempts to recover a damaged tape structure
Full RecoveryDestructiveComprehensive recovery - used when Deep Recovery reports missing files
CautionRollback, Deep Recovery, and Full Recovery are destructive operations. SymplyATOM2 requires two-step confirmation before any destructive action to help prevent accidental data loss.

Full Write Test NEW

An end-to-end media verification test that writes incompressible data across the entire tape surface. This is particularly useful for validating new media or investigating suspected media defects, as it exercises the full capacity of the tape and drive write path.

Firmware Management with Signature Verification NEW

SymplyATOM2 introduces a managed firmware upgrade workflow. Firmware files are hosted on Symply’s cloud infrastructure and digitally signed - SymplyATOM2 verifies each signature before applying an upgrade, protecting against corrupted or tampered firmware files. For iSCSI-connected drives, post-upgrade reconnection is handled automatically.

Proactive Drive Reporting

Structured, organised log output across all operations. Every diagnostic test, log retrieval, and firmware action writes to a dedicated, timestamped folder under the application’s log directory. Logs are retained automatically for 30 days, so historical results are always available when you need them.
